About the Premiere Performances in the 2023/24 Season

Franz Lehár: The Land of Smiles, operetta
Alojz Ajdič: Mice in the Opera House, comic opera

Conductor: Simon Dvoršak
Director: Eva Hribernik

A gramophone recording of the aria «Dein ist mein ganzes hertz« (You Are My Heart's Delight) was released and became famous even before the premiere of the operetta The Land of Smiles on 10th October 1929 at the Metropol Theater Berlin. The audience then flocked to the theatre to enjoy its live performance, and the contemporaries wrote that The Land of Smiles was the first operetta in history where every piece of music became a hit.
The famous romantic operetta, filled with beautiful melodies and Chinese colour, which will surely enchant you, will be followed on the same evening by the premiere of the comic opera Mice in the Opera House by the Slovenian composer Alojz Ajdič to the libretto by Vinko Möderndorfer, which, presented in the composer's typical musical expression is a comically realistic reflection of life in the opera house, both on and behind the stage.

Bolero, ballet evening by Edward Clug and Renato Zanella

Conductor: Kevin Rhodes

Bolero, ballet by Renato Zanella
Maurice Ravel conceived his most famous work Bolero, by a commission from the Russian ballerina Ida Rubinstein. It premiered with great success at the Paris Opera in 1928 and is best known to the dance world in the rendering by Maurice Béjart from 1961. Renato Zanella joins the many choreographers who created to this composition, made up of a single escalating theme. Zanella's interpretation draws from Ravel's basic idea of the eternal musical struggle for supremacy between rhythm (power) and melody (beauty), which he underlines with the thought that reason (melody, beauty) rarely wins in a confrontation with a force of power.

Ssss…, ballet by Edward Clug to the music by Frédéric Chopin
»Be quiet,« whispers Edward Clug to us with his eloquent choreography Ssss … to the music by Frédéric Chopin. But his »sh« does not cut into the space like the authoritarian interjection »hush« because, in his case, with the three dots that follow it, it remains fairly open …

The Rite (Sacre), a ballet by Renato Zanella to the music by Igor Stravinsky (arranged by Jonathan McPhee)
Igor Stravinsky is known as a revolutionary composer who pushed the limits of musical creation with his way of composing. Ballet music The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du printemps) ranks among the prime examples of his unique composing. The choreography by Renato Zanella was inspired by the war in the former Yugoslavia and the difficult times that affected all of Europe at that time.

Jules Massenet: Werther, a Lyric Opera in Three Acts

Conductor: Ayrton Desimpelaere
Director: Luis Ernesto Doñas Gómez

Jules Massenet created the opera Werther, when he was achieving great career successes and immensely inspiring the audience with his works. Both libretto, based on Goethe's novel The Sorrows of Young Werther and the music focuses on the suppressed emotions of the two protagonists, torn between the desire for happiness and the expectations of society. Werther is an opera of powerful music and magnificent arias and duets.

Ástor Piazzolla: María de Buenos Aires, tango opera

Conductor: Ayrton Desimpelaere
Choreographer: Renato Zanella
Director: Yulia Roshina

The tango operetta by Ástor Piazzolla, the founder of the tango nuevo, with a libretto by Horacio Ferrero, premiered in 1968 at the Sala Planeta in Buenos Aires. The composer's inspiration for the creation of the work was his lover Egle Martin, about whom he once said: »She is music, she cannot belong to anyone, no, she is music, she is music, and that is me.« By fusing dance, words and singing, our performance will aim to erase the distance between the audience and the artist.

Giacomo Puccini: La Bohème, an Opera in Four Acts
A Co-production with the Opéra Grand Avignon

Conductor: Kevin Rhodes
Director: Frédéric Roels

For many opera connoisseurs, La Bohème is Puccini's best work. It reflects the composer's incredible talent for melodies, which convincingly interweave with impressionistic musical and dramatic procedures, thus revealing Puccini's undisputable sense of detail. La Bohème, considered one of the most famous works in the entire opera repertoire, is a moving musical illustration of the life of Parisian bohemians, full of hopes and dreams, joys and disappointments.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Così fan tutte, an Opera Buffa in Two Acts
A co-production with the Croatian National Theatre Zagreb

Conductor: Philipp von Steinaecker
Director: Alessio Pizzech

After The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte is the last of Mozart's operas, which he created in collaboration with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte. With its cynical and satirical view of the relationship between men and women, the opera Così fan tutte was considered risky and vulgar and only became popular in the middle of the 20th century. The work reflects Mozart's late style, while the music portrays restraint and balance and brings emotional depth to the comedic plot.
