This time's premiere staging of Rossini's Cinderella, one of the great masterpieces from the Italian operatic treasure trove, which was conceived one year after the famous opera The Barber of Seville, will mark the 200 anniversary of its first and very successful staging in Rome, in 1817. The libretto for this magical fairy tale, imbued with Rossini's light music, was written after the literary material by Charles Perrault. Although Cinderella is considered one of the composer's most ingenious pieces, it is also characterised by its very special hint of seriousness. The staging by the legendary French theatre director Jérôme Savary in a co-production with the Opéra de Rennes is by all means designed for the lovers of classic fairy tale stories.
