Margareta Matišić
Mezzo-soprano Margareta Matišić made her debut in 2018, at the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc in Rijeka, performing the role of Mrs Quickly in Verdi's Falstaff. She then made her debut in the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, where she went on to perform the Third Lady in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Suzuki in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, Marcellina in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Mercédès in Bizet's Carmen, Miss Nolan in Menotti's The Medium, and Flora Bervoix in Verdi's La Traviata. She also appeared at the Split Summer Festival, organised by the Croatian National Theatre in Split, in the role of Doma in Jakov Gotovac's most celebrated opera Ero the Joker.
In 2023, she extended her career beyond the borders of her homeland, making her debut on the stage of the SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana (Slovene National Theatre Opera and Ballet Ljubljana) in Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth) under the baton of Maestro Kevin Rhodes. She achieved considerable acclaim in 2024 with her portrayal of Charlotte in Massenet's Werther and as Azucena in Verdi's Il Trovatore. That same year, she joined the ensemble of the Ljubljana Opera as a soloist.
Her international career has blossomed further with her performance as Fenena in Verdi's Nabucco at the prestigious summer festival in Savonlinna, Finland.
She began to achieve early success already as a student: first with the role of the Witch in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, performed in Hungary and Croatia; she went on to portray Ottone in Handel's Agrippina, and also brought to life the role of Maria Theresa in the musical Trenk Cabaret on the stage of Zagreb's Komedija Theatre, as well as in numerous other theatres across Croatia.
She has been equally active on the concert stage. In 2019, she appeared as a soloist with the Zagreb Philharmonic in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, conducted by Maestro David Danzmayr at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb. She has also performed with the Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the Academy of Music in Zagreb, with whom she presented Josip Štolcer Slavinski's Kaos i Religiofonija under the baton of Maestro Mladen Tarbuk, at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb and the Slovene Philharmonic in Ljubljana. She gave further performances of the same work under the musical direction of Matija Fortuna at the 43rd May Musical »Memorial« of Josip Štolcer Slavenski in Čakovec.
She has collaborated with numerous distinguished conductors, including Marco Boemi, Oleg Caetani, Nikša Bareza, Roberto Gianola, Ville Matvejeff, Srba Dinić, Tomislav Fačini, Zoran Juranić, Marcello Mottadelli, Ayrton Desimpelaere, Beatrice Venezi, Pyotr Vandilovsky, Zsolt Hamar, Josip Šego, Aleksandar Kalajdžić, Hari Zlodre and James Sherlock. Margareta Matišić has also performed with the esteemed Belarusian State Chamber Orchestra at the Varaždin Baroque Evenings, Osijek Summer of Culture, Science Festival, Osijek Summer of Youth, and the Vukovar Chamber Music Festival, and has also been a member of the Chamber Ensemble in Osijek. Through solo recitals and collaborations with a variety of ensembles, she has had an opportunity to perform across Croatia, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Italy, Spain, and beyond.
In 2018, she earned a place in the final of the Zinka Milanov International Singing Competition in Rijeka, and already in 2016, she had reached the final of the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Cape Town, South Africa.
In 2011, she graduated with distinction from the Department of Music at the Osijek Academy of Arts and Culture, in the class of Professor Berislav Jerković, and in 2012, she obtained her master's degree from the same institution. In 2010, she was awarded the Dean's Prize for excellence in artistic work in the field of musical arts, as well as for her outstanding academic achievements. From 2015 to 2017, she pursued advanced studies at the Music Academy in Zagreb under the esteemed Professor Vlatka Oršanić.
She has taken part in numerous international vocal seminars, including the Eba Stignani Masterclass in Imola, Italy, art song interpretation seminars with Professors Annemarie Zeller and Gerhard Zeller in Austria, as well as the international baroque music and dance seminars Aestas Musica, among others.
She also boasts more than ten years of experience as a vocal pedagogue, having served at the Varaždin School of Music as a professor of singing, chamber music, and stage movement.
