Jonathan Stoughton
Jonathan Stoughton has emerged as one of Britain’s leading dramatic tenors, celebrated for his commanding stage presence and exceptional vocal artistry. During his time in the ensemble of Mannheim National Theatre since 2021, he has become a prominent interpreter of the German repertoire, making acclaimed debuts as Siegmund (Die Walküre), Parsifal, Max (Der Freischütz), and Siegfried, and being praised for his radiant, powerful tenor and expressive musicianship.
In subsequent seasons, he returned to major Wagnerian roles in Mannheim and internationally, performing Florestan (Fidelio), the Prince (Rusalka), the Emperor (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos), Vakula (Christmas Eve), Tristan (Tristan und Isolde), Turiddu (Cavalleria rusticana) and Steva (Jenufa), and made his Tokyo debut as Erik (Der fliegende Holländer).
In the 2025/26 season, Stoughton adds two significant Wagnerian roles to his repertoire. In the autumn, he makes his role debut as Lohengrin in Mannheim under the baton of GMD Roberto Rizzi Brignoli. This is followed in the spring by his house and role debut at the National Theater São Carlos in Lisbon as the eponymous hero in Wagner’s Tannhäuser. In Mannheim, he returns to Parsifal, among other roles, and at the Slovenian National Thetaer, he gives his house debut as Tristan. On the concert stage, he performs Siegmund and Siegfried in Der Ring an einem Abend, and reprises Siegmund in Act I of Die Walküre under the musical direction of Axel Kober.
