Dubravka Šeparović
Dubravka Šeparović is a National Principal at the Croatian National Theatre.
She graduated from both Zagreb’s Faculty of Architecture and the Academy of Music, where she received her Master of Arts degree. In 1999, she received the second prize in Karlovy Vary and the State Opera in Prague Award. This opened doors for her and enabled her Prague opera debut as Carmen in 2000. This was followed by an invitation to play Amneris in Brno in 2002. In 2001, she joins the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. Her first role on the Zagreb opera stage was the role of Zita in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, followed by Marina in Boris Godunov by M. P. Mussorgsky and the role of Romeo in the opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi by Vincenzo Bellini. Her role as Elettra in Mozart's Idiomeneo in 2003 proved her as a singer with a keen sense for extraordinary directorial concepts. In the same year, she received the Marijana Radev Award and the Croatian Actor Award.
Her appearances as Amneris, Eboli and Charlotte followed. In 2003, she performed together with the Janáček Theatre from Brno as Amneris and Carmen on their Japan tour. In 2004, she performed the role of Amneris in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
From 2005 to 2010, she was a regular guest in the German city of Saarbrücken, where she performed as Eboli, Adalgisa, Begbick (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany by Kurt Weill), Fricka in Wagner's Das Rheingold, Santuzza, Judith in Bartók's The Bluebeard's Castle and as an unavoidable Carmen.
At the 10th Antikenfestspiel in Trier (2007), in the opera Samson and Delilah by Camille Saint-Saëns, she presented herself to the audience in an open amphitheatre as Delilah. She also performed the role of Delilah at the St. Galen Summer Festival.
The Graz Opera engaged Dubravka Šeparović for the role of Ježibaba in Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák, directed by renowned Stefan Herheim. This engagement was followed by an invitation to participate in the premiere of Rusalka (in the German language) in Volksoper in Vienna in 2010. She continued to sing this role in the seasons of 2011 and 2012.
In Klagenfurt, she performed as Amneris, directed by Torsten Fischer (2010) and she performed in seven performances of Mahler's Second Symphony.
In the summer of 2010, she visited Beijing, where she performed the role of Herodias in the Chinese premiere of Salome by Richard Strauss.
In the meantime, Zagreb saw her performances as Carmen, Santuzza, Mère Marie, as well as Kundry (2011) and Ortrud (2013). Her unique artistic creation of Wagner’s Kundry from Parsifal won juries. She was awarded the Tito Strozzi Award, the Marijana Radev Award and the City of Zagreb Award.
As Amneris in Verdi's opera Aida, she performed at Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich in 2014 and again in 2016.
In Wuppertal, in 2015, she once again created the role of Herodias in Strauss's opera Salome.
In her Zagreb home theatre, she has performed as Genevieve, Eboli, Azucena and Kostelnička. She performed the role of Kostelnička in Janáček's opera Jenůfa at the prestigious Brno Opera Festival (in 2015 and 2016).
Among her latest roles are the roles of Orpheus in Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck, and Madame Flora in The Medium by Menotti. In 2022, she received the annual Vladimir Nazor Award for the year 2022 for these roles.
In 2022, in Rijeka, she performed Erwartung, a monodrama by Arnold Schoenberg. Her role as Clytemnestra in Strausses Elektra directed by Marin Blažević brought her the nomination for the Croatian Actor Award. In 2022, she gave successful guest performances as Cornelia in Julius Ceasar by Händel at the famous Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland.
In the German city of Koblenz, she performed as Fata Morgana in The Love for Three Oranges by Prokofiev, directed by Michiel Dijkema.
Along with her great opera creations, the artist fosters her concert performances as well. She focuses on the works of Gustav Mahler (The Boy's Magic Horn, The Song of the Earth, Rückert-Lieder, Second Symphony). the Summer Nights cycle by Berlioz, Wesendonck-Lieder
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Prague and Brno Spring Festival with Libor Pešek, Verdi's Requiem in Heidelberg, Mahler's Second Symphony at the Wrozław Festival with Jacek Kaspszyk and Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder at Beethoven's Festival in Bonn with Stefan Blunier.
She is one of the most awarded artists, having received the City of Zagreb Award, the City of Dubrovnik Award, and a decoration from the President of the Republic of Croatia.
