Vincenzo Bellini

I Capuleti e i Montecchi

  • Lyrical Tragedy in Two Acts I
  • Premiere: 18. 3. 2021

Vincenzo Bellini (1801–1835), an Italian romantic opera composer born in Sicily, created an opera story about lovers who pay for their passion with their lives. The legendary narrative has aroused creativity in literature and music since the Renaissance. Bellini's adaptation differs from Shakespeare's most famous version mainly in that it does not tell the whole story, but only the last day of the life of the admired lovers from Verona. The opera is permeated with the sense of melancholy and offers one of the most shocking closing scenes from the opera repertoire.
